I have a 1995 BMW 740il but the transmission does not go into reverse. I was wondering because I am planning on changing the transmission if I could put in any transmission from the years 1995-2001 or is the timing different?
Are there any other symptoms with your current transmission, other than the no reverse issue? I am not sure what's involved in this change over process, the level of integration with the Engine Management System and Transmission control may make the replacement options fairly specific. Someone with more expertise and experience should eb able to give you a more preceise answer, and hopefully they will be along shortly.
Good luck.
Sounds like your reverse clutch pack has gone, you will need to get a box from 09/94 upwards.
Yours is a A5S 560Z aka ZF 5HP 30
they also fitted the ZF 5HP 24 from around 96/97
You will need to fit the same box, there is a metal plaque on the side of your box that will give you the ZF # also before you chuck your old one remove the valve control body you may need it in the future...
Does it select and just doesnt move or doesnt select at all..??

I stepped in a plate of Pasta the other day - now I have to worry about my Carbonara footprint!
Hi all, i have exactly the same fault on my e34 540 too, no reverse at all, a whining noise while driving and occasionally goes in limp mode, my first move will be to check and top up the fluid, but would low fluid alone cause the loss of reverse or am I possibly looking at a major mechanical repair in the box? I recently bought the car off a mate and would like to get it back on the road again so any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance
