99 Z3 Radio Upgrade

have the factory hk business am/fm/cassette head unit. i want a am/fm/cd player that playes mp3s. (cd changer not required).

i think i have read that the stock set up is a hk head unit, with pre-outs to a hk amplifier in the trunk, to the myriad of speakers.

i only want to replace the head unit. my only experience doing this type of work is with cars that didn't have a seperate amp.

first question, is do i understand the setup correctly? secondly, is what i want to do possible? and finally, if it is possible, what are the requirements (connectors) of any replacement head unit i buy?
