Hey bmer fans. i have a 1997 840ci i just picked up. the trans is acting up, i get the trans fail safe code once in a while, and it seems to slip in low gears. Also sometimes when i am using the steptronic, it puts itself back into drive randomly. my traction control light is always on, and i cant control it with the button. just stays on. i was wondering if anyone can help me figure this out.1 i want to be able to control my traction control. 2 i want to figure out if i need a new trans or if it may the trans computer. It doesnt slip when i punch it on the freeway, but sometimes off the line. maybe that has something to do with the asc. also i was wondering if there is a trans swap that is somewhat easy, would a 5 spd auto from a e39 540 bolt on? please help me!! thanks
well i guess this is going to be no help.i figured atleast someone would know what trans i could replace with the 5 spd auto thats in my 840. i guess im just gonna find a e38 740 and go from there. No thanks to anyone here.
yes fluid has been changed. im going to put a remanufactured trans in it. i have narrowed it down to the 5hp 24 and the 5hp 30. different sites say different things. realoem.com said from my vin that it has the 5hp30, but a lot of other sites say that my late model 840s use the 5hp24. its a steptronic 5 spd auto. 840ci V8 4.4L (1996-1997) ZF 5HP24
840ci/840cia V8 4.0L/4.4L Automatic Gearbox Order V8 4.0L/4.4L (1992-1999) ZF 5HP30. so this is conflicting. should i go by realoem parts reference which says my trans is the 5hp30 or should i go by what everything else says.im really lost. im going to put it on a lift and see if i can read what trans it is. also what other bmws did they put these transmissions in? it definately needs to be steptronic 5 spd auto. Thanks very much for the help i really appreciate it.
