Is The '97-'99 740i Sport For Me?

I currently drive a '96 VW GTI VR6 with 65k on it that I purchased 4 months ago. So far, it has run fine with no major issues, however, the electrical system has a mind of its own and sometimes just dies or wont start....no explanation. It doesnt make me too frustrated because it is a great car and is very fun to drive. I am 6'4", 250# though and even though the GTI is fairly roomy for a small car, I have always thought I would be right at home in a 7-series bimmer. So I am thinking of getting into a 740i and keep my VW for a "toy" and run-around car. I have done some research but am looking for opinions on what to expect and what to look for. Obviously the newer and lower miles, the better...should I even look for a Sport model? Or should I just put better suspension and tires on a non-sport model? Those of you with experience. how reliable are these cars? I am sure the engine will last forever...but I worry more about electrical gremlins and little things that add up quick...so any thoughts are welcome. Thank you

I own a 1988 750 and it has lots of room. The 740i or il (several inches longer and several inches more rear seat leg room) would make a good car. Avoid the 1995/1996 models due to issues with the Nikasil engines, but after that date they are OK. Obviously the newere the car the less problems, and these are BMWs so parts are expensive (I use internet providers). Brake pads, struts, tires battery (under rear seat so with the "i" version you can yank the cushion straight up, with the il the seats are electric and a PITA (I have mine down to maybe 15 minutes in and out). These are great road cars but do require a bit more TLC than a VW or a Honda. Find one you like and take her for a test drive, if it intrigues you, take her to an independent tech for a look see.
