Climate control shows fan speed increasing when turned up (or on auto) but the fan never does come on. All the rest of the controls work as usual, can even hear the A/C compressor clutch kick in... but no fan. Fuse is good.

I'm considering buying this car and the dealer says it could be "awhile" before they can have it in a shop to have it looked at. Asked me if I wanted to just make an offer "AS-IS". Any thorough troubleshooting steps for this? Where should I start? Trying to get an idea of how much it might cost to fix so I can undercut the dealer (offer=asking price-estimated repairs - 1000 bucks or so for making it my problem!)

Probably a bad fan motor and/or final stage. The final stage rides "piggyback" on the fan motor and they are under the dash so the dash does have to be removed to replace. Prob around 1k to have the job done.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So probably not a task for the shade tree mechanic, eh? Is this something that a compentent local shop (they are our big BMW, Jag, Merc shop) could do or should I take it to an authorized BMW dealer/shop 70 miles away? I'm seeing "blower fan" for around $169 at places like bavauto but nothing on a "final stage". Is this aka "blower resistor" ($149) and/or "Auxiliary Fan Resistor" ($35)?

It's a 97 with 125,000 miles on it and completely loaded. Out side of some standard wear on the seats and armrests the car practicaly looks like new and runs and drives like it too. Sort of a violet color and my wife is seriously in love with it. They are asking US$9999 (was 10,999 last month) so I'm thinking $8000 might not be a bad settling price?
