'96 740IL PS Fluid - BMW Forum

Have a leaky Power Steering Hose on the docket for next weekend. In the mean time I would like to top off the PS Fluid. I need help with the type of Fluid to use. This car is PS only. The car is new to me as I have just sold my 92' 735i. The manual tells me to contact the dealer for specs??? Next question....Is there a service manual available for a '96 740IL?? Seems pretty top secret from my searches so far.

look on the ps cap. Some tell you some don't. Pull the cap and look at the fluid. It will either be ATF (Dexron Mercon III) or the special mineral oil.

If the car does NOT have self-levelling.. then regular fluid is finfine

p/s resevoir cap should say ATF fluid on the top (normal auto trans fluid) as long as you don't have the self leveling system.
