Dark_Knight_740iL is an unknown quantity at this point
Newbie here, Got a quick question.

Does a 96 740iL with a 4.4L engine have a Nikasil block? From what I have read they changed around 96 but it wasn't clear if the 96s where okay.

Thanks in advance

This post says it is still in the 96s
http://www.bmw-forums.com/forum/index.php?...0299&hl=nikasil

on the E38.org forum it says that it is only on the 95
http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/17971

They changed from the 4.0L to the 4.4L engine in 96. Would that be the point where they stopped?

I'm too sure but....

Go to yahoo and type nikasil in your browser... pick "the BMW nikasil issue"...

It has everything you need to know including models/years affected...

Been there but only found block numbers to identify.

How hard is it to see the block number? Anyone have a picture of the location?

(edit) LOS came up with an answer for me. The 96 740iL has a 4.4L engine.

The M60 is 4.0L which is the one with the Nikasil block.
The M62 is 4.4L doesn't according to the links above.

Go to Koalamotorsport.com and read Bret Andersons information on the Nikasil problem (you will find it on a right side bar of the Home page under most requested pages or something like that). Bret is a Master BMW tech and has some great information for all of us.
