93 740il no reverse

When cold weather hit. the trans started to either hard shift or delayed shift from park to reverse or neutral to reverse. then after a week of this, it would not go into reverse at all. Forward works fine thru all gears. I tried 1 test drive to see if it would work once warmed up. no change. I haven't tried anything else since. I have been searching sites for 740s with similar problems, and I have heard that it might be a plastic check valve inside the tranny. Does anyone know which valve it is? where to get the part? and is this something that can be replaced with out major Z5 540 transmission knowledge
I haven't put it on the rack yet so checking fluid level, shifter linkage. fluid and filter service and the checking the A/M switch have not been ruled out yet.

I'm in rural Montana with limited BMW mechanic access. so I am learning everthing I can before I start to do this repair myself.

there is nothing on the dash indicating trouble. the car has 137,000 miles. It runs great no problems until reverse stopped working.

went to the e32.org site and found most of what I was looking for. A pictorial instruction on the 5hp filter and valve body replacement WOW what a machine. can't wait to put it back on the road.

thanks for your help
I am still going to school for this project.
The most likely suspected problems I have learned so far, with out having a code reader are
dirty electric shift control from lack of cup holders
mis-adjusted manual shift linkage
sticking valve body
low fluid
clogged filter
worn plastic check valve
I still plan to DIY the project. I am planning to rebuild the valve body assembly since it is known that the ball check valves wear out. I haven't been able to put it on the rack yet. Winter up here in Montana has a way of slowing you down. still have to order parts, nothing local is available.
I am still looking for more sources of info. I want to make sure I do this project only once
