93 740i quits on freeway, barely idles, wont rev

Hi all,
just need some advice....car quit, and had to be towed. Has always run great, till today. Still barely starts, check engine light on, barely idles and wont stay running....Any suggestions?

Fuel filter? Fuel pump? Seems to want to backfire a little....timing?

p.s. I have spent a fortune on preventitive maintenance at the local european auto repair, and I dont want to go back there!

Could be...as the check light is one...crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor

I wouldnt have thought its the MAF/MAS its very hard to say without diagnostics, pull a spark plug and see if you have a spark would be a good start. Then get back with the results.
