All,
I am new to this BMW forum so here is my story. I have a 97 740il with a ZF5HP24 (1058 000 016). the original problem is No foward gears but reverse worked fine. I decided rebuild it on my own. I found the problem to be a broken clutch drum. I replaced it and did the entire rebuild. Now that I am done. the foward gears work fine but the reverse is not. It feels like the reverse gear engages for about 5 seconds and i feel the car move but immediately after it acts like I am in nuetral. What could possibly be my problem? It is a valve body or internal? I would hate to take this tranny out again.... ANY HELP. Anyone have a repair manual handy?
I would say it could possibly be the VCB (valve Control body), it may have some debris inside it from the cracked clutch drum, they can be serviced although I haven't seen a DIY, I took mine to ZF, when my box packed up, I put another box in and put my VCB in that I had serviced 4 months earlier, it went down the road and it went in to TRANS PROG after 200yds, I then put the one in that came with the box and it worked fine after Id driven it approx 18 miles to get all the parts moving,I then took my old one apart to find small pieces of metal in some of the channels which obviously went in when my box lost all forward gears, beware if you do take the VCB apart as there are springs in there which fly everywhere and marbles that fall out. I have been back to ZF to get the present one done and all is fine, I also got my original done again so I have a spare, what I would do is get a VCB from a breakers and put that in and see if it does the same if it does its internal.....
OK, I now have another used transmission with all good parts. I am planning to install that one ans sell the original one for parts. If you know anyone needing parts please let me know. I really need to offset the cost for the used one....
