740il indicators and stero have mind of there own!!!Help
Hi I have a '98 740il, the problem I have is that recently the indicators have started playing up on the dash they only seem to signal after i have turned or not at all! The exterior lamps signal fine when the stalk is moved!
Another problem that has started is the car has the sterio in the tv unit and sat nav etc, the monitor started to flicker quite randomly then the stero cuts out and you can not control anything on the monitor, you cant even turn it off!
These problems only started after not using the car for a few days, i suspected low battery voltage( never had a problem starting),so removed the battery and charged the problem was fine for a day then has started playing up again but only now and then!!
Do you still have the original battery in the car? If yes, most likely that's your problem. Charging it won't work.
I have a 97 540ia and replaced the original battery two months ago. You can get an aftermarket bat anywhere. Don't go to the stealer, they'll rape you ($400)!
I would also agree with LOS...just a simple tip make sure you get a battery with a vent system or the hydrogen gas that is produced while charging will eventually eat out your trunk.

Right replaced the battery today with a good quality battery as the old one was the original one. The indicators won't working on the dash and also the stero was also playing up when i removed the old one, I left it disconnected for around 30mins to let all the ecu's etc power down and erase. Put the new battery on and the fault is exactly the same!!
Something else i have noticed is the longer you drive it the more likely it is to sort its self out!
The only thing i can think of is that there is a poor earth connection some where, does any one know where all the earths are i can imagine there's rather a few!! lol
Anyone with similar problems I would love to here from you!
Everything should work now including your turn signals. There are cases where you have to re-set your remote key, radio (code), etc.
Maybe the bulbs on your panel are going bad? But it sounds like a grounding issue. Keep driving the car and make note of all eletrical issues.

Well, at least the car starts right away!
LOS
After an hour playing round and disconecting things i found the fault, the sat nav computer with it removed everything works including the turn signals apparantly the dont work on the dash if there is a comunication problem.
Anyway looks like im going to have to get a new nav or upgrade it, least I can use the radio/cd again!!
That's interesting. In a way, I'm glad I don't have the navigation option on my car (it wasn't offered at the time anyway).
They say the more options on your car, the more problems you'll encounter later on... ha ha.
Anyway, I'm glad you found the problem. Do a search on "navigation issues" on this board or Google. It's amazing the amount of info you can find! Let others know on this forum on the outcome.
