Hi All.
I'm new but have been reading alot on E38 and areas. My mechanic states I need a new Cam Sensor according to my SES readout. (of which I don't know what the code is). My understanding is that if the Cam Sensor was bad, the car would be stalling or not starting. The only thing I noticed it's doing is, sometimes a "jump" when I slow down and take a turn while applying the gas coming out of it. Usually turning to the left. I don't want to pay for a part I don't need. But if I do, can probably DIY.
Any ideas? 99' 740IL 139,000

Deffo DIY, Camshaft sensor mainly controls the injectors, as why it does it when you turn left should not make a difference to the cam sensor, when was the last time you changed the fuel filter?? as it sounds more like a fuel problem to me.
You also mention a 'jump' do you mean transmission jump as no forward drive for a second then kicks in?? if so when was the last time you had a transmission service?? should be done 80-90K then every 30-40K.

They are getting ready to service the trans this week, as the seal needs replacing. So maybe that will cure the "jump". And yes, that's what I mean. As I come out of the turn it jumps.
As for the fuel filter, they just did an oil change, but did not list all they replaced. I doubt they changed it.
I assume I'm right on the Cam Sensor? If it was bad it would be stalling or not starting? Thanks.
Well, It should go better after a transmission service ( no jump) make sure they change the trans filter and not just give it a clean, as for the cam sensor, yes you are up the right street so to speak, you also have a crankshaft sensor, which will make it not start.
What I would do, is get them to erase the error, and re do a diagnostics again say in around 2 weeks if the same thing comes back then its on its way out, if all is clear dont worry, sometimes these cars pop up errors at Lib.
I dont think you have anything to worry about at this stage, but I would advise a fuel filter change anyway.
If you get any further problems just PM me.
