The 740 is a very problematic auto. Check consumers reports and you willl see. If you like solving problems this is an excellent auto to own. When it runs well it is great but it is very subject to one issue after another. Not a very reliable auto for the significant upfront money.
I have had my 740i '98 for 2 years .....
So far:
2 cats - $1000 each - these are the first cats to fail on ANY car i owned over the last 30 YEARS. Cats failing are a consistent theme for his car.
1 water pump
1 water control valve
2 cam postioning sensors
1 air flow sensor
1 thermostat
1 instrument cluster
Car starts rough and i am told that the intake manifold gaskets need to be replaced.
Dealers don't like it when you do the work. They are not helpful and are rude if you ask a question. They also jack the price of the work and parts. Check out the price of a part on the net then call the dealer for THEIR price. The dealer charged me $100 to put in the instrument cluster.
The red air bag light is on and the dealer wants $600 to fix it. Just a sensor ...that costs $300.
The sunroof does not seal well and twice i have had to deal with water coming into the car because the gutter system that the sun roof has is not well engineered. Failing for one reason or another.
Hard to go into the dealer and ask them to do much without spending over $500.
Buy every extended warranty you can get ahold of or do not buy this car.
