Is there any way I can replace the Motorola phone that came with this vehicle with a new model Qualcomm phone? Perhaps an adapter cable of some sort?

in the 01, you're pretty much stuck with it...no matter what it wont work with the car's hands-free system.... you might want to check out bmwtips.com (its for the e39, but has an excellent portion on phone modifications.)
