Hello - I'm a newbie to E38's. I just picked up a 2001 740iL Impala Brown Metallic. Yes, I know - some of you don't like the color - it's definitely a Love/Hate color - I really like it...so far at least. Anyhow....
So my powersteering pump blew recently and I had it replaced. About 20 miles after replacement, I started getting a loud knock in my engine bay - turns out 1 of the 3 bolts that holds the pulley on to the pump had wiggled it's way out and was causing the pulley to shake violently. My mechanic replaced the hardware and used loctite when re-installing those three bolts. The steering works fine....but what I am noticing, especially when stopped is that I have a LOUD whine when I turn the wheel. Now I did check the fluid level and it was fine....so I'm wondering what else it could be?
Does anyone have any suggestions? Similar experiences?
Mine does the same thing but the pump has not been replaced, i check ALL the fluids often and at times it has been low. It's apparent that i have a small leak, but even topped off it still has a whine. I have been told the rack on the steering in these cars 740's have problems but i don't what they are ?
I found my leak, it's as i thought at the rack. How difficult is this to repair, damn i should have fixed this problem when i had the motor out. Any advise would be great as i plan to keep this car a loooong time, this is my favorite body style of all the big beemers. I just put a new motor in her and she runs better than new, also bought new Pirelli P Zero's tires and am having the car cut and polished and completely detailed inside and out. This is by far the best looking 740iL rolling around town, the wife loves this car. It also has the M package which just makes this car even nicer, the only flaw is the readout on the dash it looks like it reads in Chinese. LOL !
Mine only Whines when I'm turning. No actual issues other than the noise. It's very annoying. I just ordered a power steering pump reservoir. I am going to do that swap and put some redline synthetic ATF in. Going to give that a shot and see what happens.
So this morning - I decided to listen to it with the windows down while stopped. Very light whine when not moving at all - I figure that's typical. I turn the wheel and it starts to whine loudly - and I can almost hear something in sync with the engine idle...almost like it's tapping/rubbing a fan or something. (Poor description I know)
As far as functioning - it functions fine. Fluid is clean and full. It's just noisy and kind of embarrassing.

A new rack isnt that bad to install. Takes a good couple hours though. Theirs two bolts holding the rack into the car (if its like my E36) and removing them allows it to slide out once all the hoses are disconnected. Its DIYable.
Check out The Rack Doctor as he usually has really good deals on new ones.
Update - the line from the Power Steering reservoir to the pump was leaking - this is a high pressure line (high pressure draw to pump apparently) Swapped that out and also swapped the pump out and the noise is gone. I need to buy one more line - cooler back to reservoir as that has a very slight leak, but that's not a big deal since it's low pressure. Just ordered the idler pulleys w/adjuster since there was a little bearing noise when my mechanic checked those after pulling off the belt. So hopefully (fingers crossed) I'll be all set next week.
Then I can tackle that 2 second rattle in my motor at startup!
