2001 740 Cranks Hard and Stalls

My 740 is cranking hard. Sometimes takes 3 or 4 attempts, but always eventually starts. Also it is stalling at idle or at speeds below 30 mph. It has been in the dealer more than my garage the last 2 months. Dealer was sure it was the MAF, but replacing that did not help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, A few Ideas:

1, could be injectors try putting a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank.

2, E38's have a problem with oil getting around the back two spark plugs, due to the camber of the engine ( leans back ) ,the oil comes from the rocker cover gaskets & rubber seals around the bolts, this happens over time (dont know your mileage?)

3, Idle valve dirty

4, could be your fuel pump

I would go with the injector cleaner 1st and see what happens, may take a couple of days to work its self through the system, bung the whole bottle in on nearly empty tank then fill up( ignore what it says on the bottle) Then get back to me via PM and we an go from there, as Im in the UK dont expect an instant response due to time zones

Regards,

Marti.

When was your last tune up? How many miles are on the car?
2001 thats an E38 that has the M62... common issue with it is the valve covers leak into the spark plug and coil area and can foul a coil... Pull the spark plugs and check the condition of them... any check engine light?

Car has 82,000 miles. Several coils were replaced previously. It's at the dealer again. Dealer says tune-up comes at 100,000 miles. Thanks!
