2000 750il Crank but wont start

I need help troubleshooting. The car has 120K on it, Im the second owner. I put the ket in the ignition and turn it but it wont start. I can hear the fuel pump going on in the trunk and I can smell gas. Nothing is loose or leaking. I would say 4 out of 10 times it will start. The first time it happened and I finally got it to start it died at a stoplight. If I leave the key turned thats when I get the best luck of it firing up.

Is the problem different when the car is hot?
You can smell gas, can you tell where its coming from?
Can you smell gas even if you don't crank the engine over, just turn the key to the position where all the dash lights come on?
Has anything been done on the car recently that preceeded this issue occuring?
