I recently bought a 97' 740i at auction with a known transmission problem: There is no action when the reverse gear is selected. And there is minimum action when the drive gear is selected. There are obvious transmission leaks. I haven't put it on a lift yet, but can tell from the oil on the floor.
I need some advice on how I should diagnose this issue. Look for leaks? Replace seals and gaskets? And try a transmission fluid flush? Or, does the Reverse gear not working at all indicate a failed transmission. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
How many miles are on the car. It may be time to look at a change over gear box, or a rebuild. What color is the oil that is coming out of the gear box?
