1993 740i Clicking After Engine Turned Off

Does anyone have any info on a 1993 740 "clicking" after turn off? It almost sounds like a fluid dripping on the exhaust. It is not coolant or oil (no loss in over a month) , but could be gas. None ever spills to the ground though. It gets terrible gas mileage, but it always has. Also the sound seems to be coming from underneath the middle of the car around the converters. if it is coming from the exhaust then it is just the cats cooling off adn the metal popping. nothing to worry about all cars do it. i have noticed that some of the old 7's or e34's make a clicking noise from inside the car after being shut off that noise is just the stepper motors in the A/C system moving.
